Museum ranked as one of Newbury's top three attractions

A West Berkshire museum has been listed as one of Newbury's top three attractions by a ratings website.

The West Berkshire Museum received the rating was given Three Best Rated, a website that compiles the best businesses and places in major towns and cities in the UK.

The museum has gone through many phases of change since it first opened in 1904 with the most recent additions being the permanent exhibition Lives and Landscapes which tells the story of West Berkshire.

Visitor numbers have increased with families enjoying the new immersive exhibition with many objects that had never been shown before, including:

  • beautifully crafted stone age tools
  • 4000 year old pottery
  • iron age hordes of gold torques and coins
  • a mammoth tusk excavated in Thatcham in 1936
  • the famous story of the Newbury coat
  • the old town stocks and artefacts from Combe Gibbet
  • the Greenham peace camps and much more
  • a stunning 3D model and film all about the district.

The second floor of the museum hosts a changing programme of Special Exhibitions and Gallery Five. This can be hired to display original artwork, sculpture and crafts.

West Berkshire Museum is open Wed to Sun 10am to 4pm. Eentry is free but donations are most welcomed.
