AGATHA CHRISTIE: Black Coffee opens next week

Our first subscriber season show opens next week, coincidentally on the anniversary of the birth of Agatha Christie, the woman who penned the piece. Black Coffee features popular Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot and his companion Hastings. They are called to investigate a mystery by Sir Claude Amory but find upon their arrival that he is dead!

The show runs from 15-23 September 2023. The first night is a 7:30pm performance, Saturday 16th is a 2:30pm matinee then Monday-Saturday 18th-23rd are at 7:30pm again.

Who could have killed Sir Claude? His maiden sister Caroline? His son Richard or niece Barbara? What about Richard’s beautiful wife Lucia or her Italian friend Dr Carelli?

Then there is his secretary Edward Raynor – was he loyal to the end? The show is a must for fans of mysteries and indeed history.

We are looking back at the history of our theatre this weekend! Our theatre is open for tours as part of the Heritage Open Day taking place on Saturday 9th September.

Between 1pm and 4pm there will be walking tours around our glorious, purpose built gem of a building. The tours will take around 75 minutes and will involve stairs to access some areas.

Another tour taking place this weekend for music fans will also call in to see us – this is because of the time a local band made up of four young men performed Twist and Shout on the stage of our 400+ seater auditorium!

That’s right, The Beatles performed on our stage when recording a gig for the BBC. They were in town to perform at the Odeon on Monday 26th August 1963.

The link prevails as one of our regular actors is in the resident band at The Cavern; Tony O’Keeffe is a drummer with The Shakers and was most recently seen playing Edmund Blackadder.
