New and improved CCTV system for the Vale of Glamorgan

As part of a joint agreement between the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Cardiff Council and the Police and Crime Commissioner, the CCTV network in the Vale of Glamorgan will be upgraded.

All 78 static cameras across Barry, Penarth and Llantwit Major will be upgraded, and the installation of new cameras on Kings Square Barry, Penarth Esplanade and in Cowbridge.

The new system will be funded by both The Police and Crime Commissioner and the Vale of Glamorgan Council. Money will be spent on upgrading existing cameras, installing new ones, and upgrading or replacing the monitoring equipment and the entire infrastructure that sits behind the CCTV service.  

The cameras will be monitored 24/7 across the Vale through a collaboration with Cardiff Council and for the first time, an additional viewing capability will be implemented in Barry Police Station.

This will give the Council and South Wales Police the facility to respond to issues rapidly and work in partnership to implement real time solutions to local problems.

Councillor Eddie Williams, cabinet member for legal, regulatory and planning services said: “An effective CCTV system is an important part of keeping people safe in the modern world.

“Such an operation can help identify the perpetrators of a crime, but more importantly act as a deterrent, discouraging peoples from committing such offences in the first place.

“The Vale remains an extremely safe place to live. We hope that implementing this new service, in partnership with Cardiff Council and the Police, will help keep it that way.”

South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Alun Michael said: “Strengthening community safety arrangements across South Wales is a priority for me as set out in the Police and Crime Plan and I am delighted that our collaborative work in Cardiff and the Vale will lead to these improvements in CCTV coverage which will play a part in keeping people safe and to prevent and detect crime.

“We have seen some of the most serious offences of violence detected and people being brought to justice through the good work of police officers and CCTV operators and I hope that the enhanced coverage and monitoring of the cameras will also make people think twice before committing offences.

“It’s important to respond quickly and well when bad things happen but it’s even better if we can prevent bad things happening in the first place and CCTV plays an important role in the evidence to bring offenders to book and in the crucial work of prevention”.
