MARATHON man Kevin Woodard is taking on a massive mileage challenge in aid of Torquay’s Rowcroft Hospice.

Kevin, from Newton Abbot, is totting up the miles in a cumulative challenge for the hospice in memory of his mum, who died last year.

He ran just one mile to mark his mum’s birthday on March 1, then two on March 2, three on March 3 and so on.

On March 31 his 31-mile run around the Brunel Industrial Estate will mark the end of his remarkable challenge.

“By the end of the run I will have travelled 496 miles,” he said. “And in the last six days, will be taking on at least a marathon every day!”

So far his runs have taken him far and wide in the South Devon countryside in aid of a charity close to his heart.

He explained: “Rowcroft’s Hospice at Home team cared for my mum last year, and the care and support they gave her and the family brought great comfort. Rowcroft are an amazing charity and rely massively on fundraising.

“I wanted to do something to help them care for other families, like they did ours.”

Kevin is close to raising £1,000 so far, and is hoping to hit £1,250, which is the average cost of caring for a patient through Hospice at Home.

Debbi Shotton, Rowcroft’s Community Fundraising Officer said: “We are so grateful that Kevin has taken on this huge challenge in support of us.

“Over the last year, our Hospice at Home team have faced an increased demand for their services.

“We care for over 80 per cent of our patients in their own home and increasingly, this is where patients would choose to spend their last days. People like Kevin help us to enable them to fulfil their wishes.”

Kevin went on: “My last run will be on March 31 when I will be taking on a route around the Brunel Industrial Estate in Newton Abbot from around 1.30pm.

“If anyone would like to come out to cheer me on, that would be great – socially distanced, of course!”
