Non-profit organisation offers free peer support in the perinatal period

A non-profit organisation in Derby is offering free peer support in the perinatal period. This consists of support for new and expectant parents (both mum, dad and non birthing partners).
Connected offer a range of services which include free 1-1 support in pregnancy, birth and postnatally up to approximately 12 weeks. A free six week baby massage class (depending on the baby’s age) and a range of free community groups in Derby, including a space for dads to.
These community groups are in the Derby City Centre area of Normanton, Alvaston and Chaddesden. Connected also work in partnership with Derby County Community Trust and hold a Dad’s Space on a Thursday morning in the Chaddesden area and a Dad’s Space on every first and third Thursday of the month at the Harrsions Hub at Pride Park Stadium.
They have no referral criteria other than being a Derby City resident/receiving or having received care at the Royal Derby Hospital. All of the community groups are on a no need to book basis and are all run by trained Peer Support workers.
The 1-1 support they offer is via self referral or referral from involved professionals. As a team, Connected recognise what a vulnerable time the perinatal period is, for both parents, and are trying to reach all families across Derby.
The team mainly consists of 28 volunteers who give on average 11,684 hours of work per year.
Connected offer free Peer Support training for all volunteers which consists of:
- Regular 1-1’s throughout training to explore options and personal goals
- 6-8 weekly supervisions when training is complete
- Personal development support and planning
- Support with access to other training opportunities
- Opportunity to reflect on personal experiences
- Previous volunteer evaluations show increases in confidence
- References and support with job applications, further education and other external opportunities
- Twice-yearly volunteer celebration events
- Supportive cohorts and new friendships
