The number of Covid patients in hospitals is slowly decreasing but not quite enough, according to the government.

In Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Addenbrooke’s Hospital and The Rosie Maternity Hospital, there are 236 coronavirus patients currently in hospital and 54 on mechanical ventilation beds, as of Tuesday.

This is according to the government's coronavirus data dashboard.

The number of patients is slowly decreasing. The highest seven-day average was 249.9 on January 19.

Likewise with the number of patients on ventilation, the highest seven-day average was 61.6 on the same day.

In The Royal Papworth Hospital, there are 65 coronavirus patients currently in hospital and 42 on mechanical ventilation beds, as of Tuesday.

The highest seven-day average for the number of Covid patients in hospital was 65.6 on January 17, and 37.9 for the number requiring ventilation on January 23. This indicates that the number of Covid patients is not decreasing as much as one would hope.

The reason for this is because The Royal Papworth takes the sickest patients from other hospitals, which means it is always a few weeks behind the curve on other hospitals, because these patients take longer to treat.

In North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Hinchingbrooke Hospital, among others, there were 298 Covid patients in hospital as of Tuesday, and 23 on ventilation.

The number of Covid patients continues to increase daily, with no signs of slowing down yet. The number of patients requiring ventilation is leveling off, but not decreasing.

Across the UK, there were 32,466 Covid patients in hospital, with 3,726 on ventilation.

This is down from the highest seven-day average of 38,393.6 on January 19 and 4,017.9 on January 23.
