A campaigner for the heritage of Sefton is recommending that key stakeholders adopt the signature black on white abacus head color scheme along their victorian verandahs to promote themselves, the village and increase overall investment enthusiasm across Birkdale.
Mr. Barton, as part of his long-running village audit is seeking to make Birkdale a pristine example of Levelling Up action to support future and ongoing equivalent
style grant applications that would improve area infrastructure. As part of the original colour scheme preferred by the local authority, the contrastingly simple yet effective sequence would enable a best possible showcase of east Birkdale.
The community campaigner is seeking a full painting of the ornate metalwork
canopies in their neighbouring versions’ signature black and white iteration thereby highlighting these more prominently during the daytime and incentivising people to visit and invest in vacant shop units across Birkdale.

He says: “With major global events ranging from the Golf Open to the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, and the Coronation of HRH King Charles III, there are so many reasons to smarten up this main gateway into Southport. Being situated right in the centre of Birkdale Village, these are key buildings of note that people approach when entering from three compass points alone and with traffic often based at the level crossing, this would bring an additional marketing stroke of genius for those based here.
“The locally acclaimed parade of shops encompassing Verite Restaurant up to and
including Barrique Restaurant between No.7-17 Liverpool Road would become much more visible to motorists alongside old and new customers alike, serving as an investor magnet for business people considering new premises around the area that also value and appreciate high grade civic heritage.
“Whilst this individual feature has been apparently missed by previous Contractors, it is still not too late to rectify and integrate these subtle yet powerfully striking enhancements which really help to show from afar the majesty of these magnificent buildings. Whilst it would be tremendous to see the colour scheme adopted, the key stakeholders should also be commended for excellent upkeep and presentation of their section of Liverpool Road.”
