Opinion: Car parking survey could stimulate Levelling Up if conducted across the Borough
Local campaigner David Barton discusses how best to support businesses in the area
COMMUNITY CAMPAIGNER: David Barton
Submitted by David Barton
A campaigner for the heritage of Sefton is strongly recommending for his
local authority to adopt his consultation-style questionnaire to ascertain the best way to support both fledgling and established businesses alike, that depend on car parking for their core custom base.
David Barton believes that car parking has become increasingly a far-reaching issue for many in supporting the retail sector and that optimal resources should be used to derive the greatest possible yield of feedback to elicit the necessary support package. In producing a broad spectrum of data this will allow accurate comparisons to be drawn regarding the impact of time-limited restrictions on individual and groups of businesses based across commonly regarded quiet and busy areas.
The community campaigner states that this piece of information alone could be immensely useful in submissions for future mass-scale grant funding concerning infrastructure improvements thereby guaranteeing a strong and healthy return on investment for the local authority if it so choose to action a consultation of this type and subsequently publish all detailed findings for the community.

He says: βIn providing Sefton Council my version of an appropriate consultation that could harness actual grassroots thinking, I hope that this may be ultimately adopted and carried out as soon as possible and over as long a timeframe as possible to enable maximum accuracy, precision and reliability. Whilst I find that I am often bringing forward well-thought out and researched proposals for elected officials, this is a serious issue which needs addressing and resolving by the powers that be in order to prevent the local economy contracting irreversibly.β
Mr. Barton has outlined his Survey Questions which may comprise the core
formatting of the consultation if they were to go ahead:
- Name of Resident and/or Business
- Location in and around Sefton Area
- How long based there/ established.
- Relationship to area (Everyday role)
- Primary product/ service
- Is car parking currently sufficient?
- If no to the above would this benefit your business?
- Do you presently use any affiliated car parking for personal or professional use?
- Would the removal of time-limited restrictions benefit your business and if so to what extent?
- What additional improvements would make your business better?
