David Barton is suggesting a technological measure that could promote businesses seldom advertised and bring a new purpose for telephone boxes all year round, especially during the tourist season.

Mr. Barton is recommending production of a web-based app that would build on his prior proposal to support lesser-known businesses, especially those based in cloisters. This app would provide pictograms with maps and detailed descriptions of all businesses based in the surrounding area circumference with the ability to expand this across a network of other place-based telephone boxes.

This would utilize a QRcode and VR technology found within the telephone box that would enable an instant scan of the areas business prospectus with the potential to integrate app-based 3D imagery to better indicate the products and services available. This may also provide further information on vacant units on the condition that the key stakeholder had consented to their property being viewed on either a public or private subscription basis.

He says: “This relatively simple yet effective concept could be a powerful
game-changer in remodeling the Built Environment for the betterment of
everyone. The telephone box, whilst admittedly playing a minor role could be the gateway to aiding existing and upcoming businesses with the very possibility of securing a fully occupied high street and shopping precinct across areas such as Birkdale and beyond.

“My hope in the long-term would be for this to galvanize investor excitement for more ambitious place making purposed outlets across the entirety of the borough with those operating or considering basing their business in other areas being enfranchised to do so where there is motivation to do so. Whilst apps like Google View are useful, the main difference with this idea is that there would be accurately pre-recorded 3D imagery that may be run offline in the event people can’t access the internet or wish to conserve their data usage.”
