Plenty of scrumping in Buckland Brewer as new orchard is planted

A new orchard is set to bring dozens of apples to Buckland Brewer.

Town clerk Patrick Blosse applied for a grant and was successful in obtaining £300 towards the apple trees.

He said: “We originally said we’d plant them along the inside of the hedge on the amenity field, inside the fence and create a little orchard.

“I think with £300 at current prices we should be able to get ten or more saplings.”

The news has been welcomed by councillors.

Councillor Andrew Hewitt said: “On your way to school, they will be able to pick themselves an apple. Nothing wrong with that.”

Councillor Trevor Mills added: “I’ve just bought seven trees for £100. There should be plenty of scrumping for the kids.

“Your mother won’t have to pack you one for school, you’ll be able to pick one up.”
