Poignant tale of life after Aberfan tragedy

The next Southport Dramatic Club show is The Revlon Girl

We are almost half way through 2024 and what a year it has been! So far this month we have had BOS MTC presenting Sister Act and then Maghull MTC performing Spamalot. The next SDC show is The Revlon Girl in our theatre bar from Tuesday, June 18 - Saturday, June 22.  

Performances begin at 7.30pm each evening and there is an additional Matinee on Saturday, June 22 at 2.30pm. The play is set in the Aberfan Hotel on a rainy evening in the summer of 1967, eight months after the disaster that claimed the lives of 116 children and 28 adults.

One evening, a representative from Revlon was invited to give the bereaved mothers group a talk and demonstration to help them to feel more ‘normal’ and get back to themselves in some way. The script is based on real residents and sensitive research.

As the play opens, we meet Sian who is setting up the function room when the Revlon Girl arrives. She is excited to welcome their visitor and is keenly optimistic, although acutely aware of the unusual circumstances and potential judgement of other people in the village.

Marilyn arrives next, a nervous woman who carries around a drawing her daughter drew, which she believes was a premonition.  The other mothers who follow are Rona, a forthright woman who is carrying a lot of anger and Jean, the vicar’s wife who is clinging to her faith and urging the others to do the same.

Throughout the evening, the audience learn about the women’s experiences at the same time as the Revlon Girl does, and then eventually learn more about what inspired her to volunteer for this unusual posting. Director Amy Palmer-Farrar has brought her trademark multi-media approach to this must-see production and assembled an experienced cast to deliver the vision.
