Youngsters disguised as Minions set out on a mile chase around the grounds of their Stafford school in a Gru-eling challenge to raise hundreds of pounds for a local charity.
Depicting Universal Pictures’ popular yellow characters, a dozen Stafford Grammar pupils were in hot pursuit of a classmate dressed in a banana costume.
Their efforts not only attracted cheers from their school community in Stafford, Staffordshire, but also won the approval of passing drivers who sounded their vehicle horns.
With lunchtimes staggered to comply with Covid regulations, the year seven outfit will go that extra mile by repeating their charity caper a second time so that more students can watch and donate to the Stafford-based Katharine House Hospice. The group’s target is to raise more than £300.
Their teacher Anne-Laure Weetman, who also put her best foot forward and played the role of reformed super-villain Gru from the Despicable Me movie series, said: “One of the reasons we chose silly outfits was to make people laugh, as we’ve all had a long and difficult term due to the virus and this was a great morale booster.
“Minions love bananas, so the banana led the run.
"It was particularly difficult for those with inflatable outfits because as they got hot and sweaty, it made it impossible for them to see where they were going. And we’ll be doing the event all over again!
“Students were lining up to cheer us on and it was great to see everyone enjoying the spectacle. We also got the unexpected sound of a lot of horns when we were running alongside the road.
"The children loved that and started waving back.”
