Pupils at a South Cheshire school are encouraged to ‘reach for the stars’.

The comment was made by His Majesty's Inspector (HMI) Niamh Howlett following a two day 'inspection of a good school' at Vine Tree Primary, Dane Bank Avenue, Crewe.

"Vine Tree Primary School continues to be a good school," said the HMI. Staff have established 'warm and caring relationships' with pupils and they know the youngsters and their families in the school well. Pupils listen attentively in lessons and work well by themselves or with others. They try their best and achieve well.

"Pupils are encouraged by staff to ‘reach for the stars’. "They are excited about going to school and they enjoy learning, having fun and making friends."

Leaders have 'high expectations' of their behaviour and achievement and the children take pride in their work and take heed of the advice given to them by their teachers. There are 'many opportunities' for pupils to take part in clubs and activities and they enjoy football and gymnastics. All pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), are encouraged to join in.

Pupils feel safe and well cared for in the school.

The curriculum covers the full range of subjects from the early years to Year 6. Suitably ambitious curriculums have been constructed that enable all pupils, including those with SEND, to build on the skills they have already learned. In some subjects leaders have also identified the important knowledge that pupils and children need to learn and pupils learn well in those subjects.

However, in a few subjects, leaders are not as clear about the knowledge that they want pupils to know and remember. Staff provide extra help for those pupils who have not grasped what has been taught and teachers provide opportunities for pupils to revisit what they have learned before. This helps them to recall their learning over time.

Pupils, including those with SEND, enjoy reading and learn to read well. They behave well around school and learning in lessons is not interrupted. They enjoy taking on additional responsibilities and there is an appropriate curriculum to support their personal development. Additional needs are identified at the earliest opportunity to ensure they are fully included in school life.

During the visit the inspector looked particularly at early reading, mathematics and history.
