Pupils shine to land £10,000 solar prize for school

STAFF and students at a primary school will be leading the way in the battle against climate change after having solar panels installed.

The equipment, at Bollington St John's Primary, on Grimshaw Lane, is capable of producing 14.5kw of energy.

Pupils secured the £10,000 prize by winning the Sunshine Solar Panel competition, run by Cheshire East Council and energy firm Storengy UK last summer.

They had to come up with a scheme to encourage a sustainable lifestyle and their idea of a mobile phone app impressed the judges.

It was called Planet Points and gave users points for environmentally friendly actions such as turning off lights, litter picking and active travel.

Altogether there are now 37 panels on the roof of the school.

Headteacher Melanie Walker, thanked the council and Storengy UK and said: "We are absolutely thrilled to have won this amazing competition.

"The children at St John’s are passionate about their global learning and addressing global issues such as climate change.

"They enthusiastically thought about, and designed their app, hoping it had the potential to make a real difference.

"We are all delighted at their success and so very proud of them all."
