Pupils sing in the Chinese new year

STUDENTS braved the wind and rain to serenade visitors to Macclesfield town centre and celebrate Chinese New Year.

The Year of the Tiger began this week and youngsters from Tytherington School, in Cheshire, were at the Market Place on Saturday.

The year eights are among those learning Mandarin and sang a selection of Chinese songs.

A parade that had been planned was  cancelled because of the weather but upon arrival students decided to  press on with the performance.

It included five songs, including one  called Gongxi, Gongxi, which translates to ‘Greetings, Greetings’ and is  traditionally sung at Chinese New Year.

Pupil Ben Thomas said: “I really enjoy  learning Mandarin because of the unique opportunity it provides to learn  this totally new language.

“Some aspects are challenging, my  parents can’t help me with my homework and the volume of work is quite  hard to juggle, but that has taught me to be very organised.”

Recent tests have shown progress in Mandarin at the school is above the national average.
