Road safety improvements near Preston Bus Station given green light

Approval has been granted for essential road safety upgrades near Preston Bus Station, with Lancashire County Council's cabinet giving the green light to plans for a modern bus stop and restricted parking area on Lancaster Road between 87 and 97, just north of Tenterfield Street. These improvements aim to enhance cyclist awareness of stationary buses and enhance safety for all road users.

The scheme will create more room for buses near the boarding area, ensuring safer access for passengers getting on and off buses. The decision follows requests from passengers and input from local residents and businesses during consultations held in January and February last year.

It also caters to the needs of vulnerable passengers by ensuring buses can align with raised kerbs, as mandated by national regulations. A spokesperson for Lancashire County Council said: “The traffic regulation orders and clearway proposals will improve public transport access and flow, improving services for users who are either unable to drive or who do not have access to private vehicles.

“Introducing a prohibited parking area outside 87-97 on Lancaster Road in Preston will really help people by ensuring that buses can park at the designated bus stop kerbs, greatly improving access and the means of disembarking from the buses for our vulnerable passengers, or those who are restricted in mobility.”
