Rochdale college calls on local tradespeople to switch to teaching

Hopwood Hall College is calling on local tradespeople to switch to teaching and share their skills with the next generation.

The college, which has campuses in Rochdale and Middleton, wants skilled tradespeople such as plumbers, builders and electricians to come forward and teach a new generation of students.

It comes as the government launches a new campaign to tackle skills shortages in further education with the Department for Education aiming to recruit 4,000 people into the sector by 2025.

The transition to teaching is designed to be seamless at Hopwood, with comprehensive training and support packages available to those who opt to switch to the profession.

Julia Heap, Principal and CEO of Hopwood Hall College, said: “Teaching can be a natural progression for tradespeople who are passionate about their craft and have so much expertise to offer.

“Many of our current tutors have come from similar professional backgrounds and find so much enjoyment in ensuring the next generation are able to master the same skillset.

“Whether you’re thinking that it’s time for a change or simply interested in hearing about the opportunities, we’d like to encourage you to join us at our upcoming recruitment event.

“It promises to be an eye-opening experience for people of all ages who have always wondered why so many tradespeople choose to side-step into teaching.”
