A pair of charity workers are set to run the Manchester marathon - to mark a homelessness charity's 50th anniversary.

Rochdale-based homelessness charity, Petrus, which provides housing services and day-to-day support to people who are homeless or are at risk of homelessness, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

As part of the celebrations Petrus is aiming to raise £50,000 to support the work they do across the borough.

Petrus Service Lead, Liz Varey, and Cate Manning, assistant director of business of The Regenda Group, which works with Petrus across the housing and construction sector, are doing their bit by running the Therme Manchester Marathon on April 3, 2022.

They will be doing the marathon as a relay, by running 13.1 miles each.

Liz, who has worked at Petrus for 16 years, said: “Every day, I work with the most incredible people, from the staff at Petrus to those who use our services.

“We literally change lives, supporting people into safe places and working with them for as long as they need us.

“But we rely on donations. £100 provides a free daily breakfast for 55 people for a whole week.

"£20 provides a good quality sleeping bag and toiletries. Your donation will make a huge difference to the people we work with.”

Cate Manning, assistant director of business of The Regenda Group, which works with Petrus.

Any money raised will also help the charity to provide supported accommodation, outreach services, support, advice and hot meals through their hub and social prescribing through their award-winning community allotment, Petrus PIER.

Cate said: “When Liz asked me to run the marathon with her as a relay, I absolutely jumped at the chance.

“I’ve worked with Petrus for a number of years as part of my role within The Regenda Group and I’m so excited to support them again. Even a small amount of money can make a big difference.”
