Rossendale Ramblers: Ideal weather for walking

ROSSENDALE RAMBLERS: Hard to believe near Standish

Submitted by Rossendale Ramblers

Our walks this week have enjoyed dry but coolish autumn weather - ideal for walking.

On Wednesday, September 21, 15 ramblers had a relatively easy 10 mile walk in the agricultural area around Standish, which also took in Gathurst golf club, the M6, and the Leeds & Liverpool canal. An interesting feature of this walk was a field planted with multiple crops to attract wildlife - an excellent idea.

Our second walk, on Sunday, September 25, enabled eight walkers to thoroughly explore the wonderful Rivington Terraced Gardens, with their beautiful lakes and very impressive buildings, including the iconic Pigeon Tower. An ascent of Rivington Pike and a visit to the scaled replica of Liverpool Castle completed a lovely six mile walk.

Coming up, on Saturday, October 1 we have our first Saturday morning pub walk of the autumn/winter period. Starting at 10.30am from Affetside, this two hour walk will finish with an optional lunch at a local hostelry. These walks are very sociable, and are a good starting point for new walkers, so we hope to see you there.

Then on Wednesday, October 5 we offer a 10 mile walk from Otley, a new area for us, that promises interesting scenery, including views of local landmark the Chevin.

These walks are free, but after three walks with us we ask you to join The Ramblers, at a cost of only £3.05 per month.
