Runcorn Linnets Ladies put their first points on the board on Wednesday night with a 3-0 home victory over Alder Ladies in the North West Women's Regional League Division One South.

Bu Linnets' second game of the league season threatened to boil over in the closing stages, a player from each side being dismissed.

Marcia Jones-Sacharewicz scored from inside the penalty area on six minutes and a Mollie Bennett 30- yarder on the half hour gave the home side a 2-0 lead at the break.

This could have been more. The visitors hit the angle of post and bar but, in truth, Claudia Basnett in the Linnets goal had little to do.

Chelsea Gillies sealed the victory for the Linnets with a sweet turn and finish in the 53rd minute. But the game ended on a sour note when youngster Erin Roberts was taken out by a challenge in front of the home support.

Before the resulting free-kick could be taken, the incident spilled over into a melee which resulted in Jones-Sacharewicz from Runcorn and a player from Alder being red carded.

This put a dampener on what up to that point had been a relatively quiet game.

Manager Dave Todd and his assistant Thomas Dyson were nevertheless full of praise for their team's performance. But they know the side has a lot more to give.

Sunday will see the return of the holidaying Lile Ashley, Beth Middleton and 'keeper Chloe Jordan for the visit to Wythenshawe Amateurs Ladies.
