South Ayrshire nurse retires after 40 years service

A dedicated South Ayrshire nurse has retired after 40 years service.

Anne Nelson, from Girvan, has retired from her nursing services with the NHS after four decades of fulfilling her dream job.

When Anne was a teen at Cumnock Academy she told her teacher she wanted to embark on a career in nursing.

And aged 19 she got her wish as she started out as a trainee nurse at Ballochmyle Hospital.

From Ballochmyle she transferred to The Cresswell Maternity Hospital in Dumfries and qualified as a mid-wife, before moving back to Ayrshire to practice at Thornyflats Maternity Hospital in Ayr.

Her next position was with the Carrick Glen Private Hospital in Ayr and from there to the Ayr Hospice.

The opportunity to move to Girvan and be closer to the family farm at Turnberry came in 2003 when she was invited to join a doctor’s practice at the Girvan Medical Centre.

And it was from here, as a nurse practitioner, that Anne retired last week.

Grateful patients from GMC threw a retirement bash for her at Wildings Hotel in Maidens to thank her for the care and kindness she has shown them.

Anne was presented with a voucher along with a beautiful bouquet of flowers.

But there’s no rest in retirement as Anne said she’ll be working on the family farm Laigh McGownston, Turnberry, with husband Neville and getting ready for lambing.

Neville and Anne met at a Young Farmers dance in the Hamilton Arms, Girvan, and as soon as conditions allow the couple will be off to New Zealand to visit family and see their grandchildren.
