Youngsters got a taste of the working world with a hands on event delivered by industry employers.

Kirkmichael and Straiton Primary Schools and their Early Years Centres celebrated ‘World of Work Day’ on June 16.

Employers and representatives from the tourism and hospitality sectors, the emergency services, Council departments and those involved in agriculture were on hand to inspire the workforce of tomorrow.

Andrew Hislop, joint Head Teacher, said: “Both schools are keen to bring learning to life and give our young people fun and meaningful learning experiences.

“We asked each employer to inspire the children and demonstrate the skills and qualities needed to be successful in their line of work through some fun activities.

“A huge thanks to all and particularly Lynne Peacock from the Scottish Ambulance Service.”

Councillor Stephen Ferry, the council’s spokesperson for Education, said: “This was a great event, which got the children thinking about what they want to do when they’re older but in a fun way.

“It was also good for the parents and carers to speak to some of the organisations to find out about the type of qualifications needed to progress in a particular sector.

“Well done to the organisers and a big thank you to all the attendees that made ‘World of Work Day’ a success.”

Isla Hardy, Chair of the Straiton Parent Council, said it was a “super day”, adding: “The school has never held an event like this, and it was just brilliant to see everyone so engaged. Everyone appeared to have lots of fun, and we all learned something from the activities.”
