AWARD-WINNING GROUP: Southport Dramatic Club Youth Theatre in rehearsals

This week our award winning Southport Dramatic Club Youth Theatre are presenting a double bill of National Theatre Connection plays. From Wednesday, March 20 - Saturday, March 23 (at 7.30pm each evening) you can enjoy two plays - “It Snows” by Bryony Lavery and “DNA” by Dennis Kelly.

The plays were intentionally written to be performed by youth theatre and are of a suitably high calibre for our incredible Youth Theatre. “It Snows” has been billed as “Same old story. Boy doesn’t meet Girl. Girl doesn’t meet Boy.

"Threatened by terrifying Lads Gang. Threatened by awe-inspiring Girls Gang. Mum and Dad have declared war… against each other. Weird neighbour in the building opposite. Usual ordinary gloominess. Then, one day, it snows. Everything changes.”

This compelling tale is presented in a sumptuously visual way with choreography from youth member Lucy Brown adding to the atmosphere. A rare snowfall changes the mood and sense of place and anything seems possible.

“DNA” was written as a response to the ever changing world views in the noughties and explores themes of how far you go to protect your liberty. It is about a group of young people who accidentally commit a serious crime and attempt to conceal it.  

Is this learned behaviour, herd mentality or just self-preservation? These contrasting yet complementary pieces are directed by Jonathon Plunkett and Deborah Bloom, the team behind last summer’s smash hit Youth Theatre production of The Addams Family. Also in rehearsal we have Dead Guilty, by Richard Harris, which will be performed from April 12-20. In this tense psychological study of guilt and obsession we follow the aftermath of the death of a man called John who dies at the wheel of his car, causing serious injuries to his companion Julia.

As Julia recovers, she meets John’s widow, Margaret and a strange friendship is forged. Directed by Tracy Bachelor and Paul James Green, this is another show not to be missed.
