St David's Hospice column: New Year, new you, new running challenge!

Three events, one weekend.

Calling all runners and walking enthusiasts - St David’s Hospice invites you to take part in the Snowdonia Trail Series, a bespoke running and walking event open to all.

It is envisaged to raise significant funds for the local charity which provides hospice care to adult patients and their families living with life limiting illnesses in Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey.

Suitable for both runners and walkers, the trail series has three separate events in some of the most stunning locations in North Wales.

To kick start the weekend, the first is a 10km night run around Llanberis’ Llyn Padarn on Friday, March 11 (7pm), followed by a 10am start in the picturesque Betws y Coed (10km), with the finale on Sunday, March 13 to the stunning Aber Falls (7km) which follows the North Wales Coastal path.

St David’s Hospice Events Coordinator, Rhian Jacobs said: “In 2020, we were able to hold the first of our Snowdonia Trail Series in Aber before the pandemic took hold postponing the other two. Now we hope to see the series return – this year with a difference all events will be the same weekend.

“You can choose to walk or run and how many you want to take part in. It’s a personal challenge that you can set the level of and a great idea for a new year resolution that you will keep!”

All participants must be over the age of 16. Registration for walkers is £16 per event, which includes a medal and £22 runners, which includes chip timing and a medal.  Alternatively, you can take part in all three events for a reduced entry fee: £39 (walkers) £49 (runners).

Meirion runs 5km a day for a whole year and set to complete over 1100 miles for St David’s Hospice

Running enthusiast, Meirion Williams started a running challenge for fun, with the aim of increasing his fitness levels during the pandemic.

But after initially setting his target to run one hundred 5km runs, which he completed in April, he decided to set another goal to motivate him to complete a year-long challenge – 5km a day, for a whole year for charity.

Every step Meirion takes on his year-long challenge is to raise money and awareness for St David’s Hospice, a local charity providing hospice care to adult patients across Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey.

On Friday, December 31, Meirion will complete his final run and it is hoped that friends and family will join him. On completing he will have run 1825km, over 1134 miles, or the equivalent of running almost 44 marathons!

Meirion who currently works as a School Technician in Design and Technology at Ysgol Creuddyn, Penryhn Bay said: “The challenge was a lot harder than I thought it’d be. When I first started running, we were in lockdown but when I went back to work at Easter it became harder to fit in the runs. My earliest run has been 4:30 in the morning.

“I’ve been away a few times this year. When in Tenerife, it was difficult with the heat, but I did get the reward of a full English after.

“When in Copenhagen, I had a bit of a nightmare on my first run there. I got lost and ended up an hour away from my hotel. I’m not great at following Google Maps. By the time I did my third run there, I knew the city like the back of my hand and it was my favourite run I’ve done so far.

“I’m now on my fourth pair of running trainers this year. My aim was to lose a few pounds and raise a few pounds for St David’s Hospice.

“My last run, on New Year’s Eve, will be from Creuddyn school at midday and finish at St David’s Hospice.”
