St David's Hospice: Tree festivals are magical start to Christmas

FESTIVE FUN: Christmas Tree Festivals are now open across the region

St David’s Hospice invites you to join them at their Christmas Tree Festivals across the region.

Visiting one of their displays is a wonderful way to enjoy the festive season, with each location filled with Christmas Trees, all beautifully adorned with decorations. This year in total there will be over 70 trees on display, created by local businesses, community groups and schools.

The original St David’s Hospice Christmas Tree Festival in Conwy, which takes place in association with Daisy Chain Floral Design, will once again return to the St Mary’s Church in Conwy from Monday, December 5 to Friday, December 16 from 11.30am-3.30pm daily and is kindly supported by Conwy Town Council.

In Menai Bridge, the Tree Festival returns for a second year (Monday, December 5 – Saturday, December 10 11am–2pm daily) and on Wednesday and Saturday the voices of local Anglesey Choir ‘Singing for Pleasure’ fill the church between 11.30am and 1.30pm.

The third Christmas Tree Festival will be displayed at the Llandudno’s St John’s Church on Mostyn Street, from Monday, December 12 to Saturday, December 17 (10am – 4pm daily).

Adrian Owen, Conwy Community Fundraiser said: “We are really looking forward to our Tree Festivals. We've seen some exceptionally creative trees and are very excited to see what this year will bring! They have been all shapes and sizes, ladened with ornaments such as traditional baubles and angels, to poppies, toy trucks and snowflakes made from wooden spoons. We have even seen a tree made out of fishing rods!

“We are so grateful to everyone who supports the event by decorating a tree. The display always looks magical and the variety of trees means that there is something for everyone.”

Since the Festival started in 2018, it has raised more than £6650 for St David’s Hospice. All proceeds from the Tree Festivals will go directly to the local end of life care across North West Wales. Entry is free for each event, with a collection bucket to place a donation of your choice should you wish.

Whilst the Christmas Tree Festivals take place, there will also be carol services under the lights of the Christmas Trees at the Conwy and Llandudno events. ‘Carols around the Tree’ in Conwy on Thursday, December 8, will feature the choirs of St Mary’s Church starting at 6.30pm.

The Llandudno Community Carol Service on Thursday 15th December (Doors open from 7pm) will see performances from The Bell Ringers and Llandudno U3A Choir .

Entry is free, and there will be a collection for St David’s Hospice. Complimentary mince pies and warming refreshments will be available at both evenings.

Rhos on Sea Rotary Tree of Lights returns

Standing below the St David’s Hospice Tree of Lights in Rhos on Sea  last Sunday (November 27), hundreds of people gathered to remember their loved ones and celebrate the coming of Christmas. Kindly organised by the Rhos on Sea Rotary, The Tree of Lights was switched on for the first time this year with its branches adorned with beautiful twinkling lights.

The ceremony took place on the Promenade and it was the first time the event has been held since 2019 due to the pandemic restrictions. The weather stayed dry for the service, which featured music from the Beulah Brass and carols from Cor Meibion Colwyn.

Rotary president Pauline Hogan said: “We were so pleased to invite the public to witness the switch on this year following such difficult times. All proceeds from the Tree of Lights will go to support the fantastic work of St David's Hospice in Llandudno.”

The lights were switched on by the Mayor of the Bay of Colwyn Cllr Colin Matthews after which an address and the blessing was given by Rev. Owen Morris.

Rhian Jacobs, event co-ordinator for St David’s Hospice said: “Our grateful thanks go to the members of the Rhos on Sea Rotary for organising the evening, the choir and band who led the crowd in carol singing, and also Griffiths Construction, Specialist Engineering Technical Services, Absolute Sounds, Conwy County Borough Council, Amberon and The Bay of Colwyn Town Council.”

Since its inception, 23 years ago, the Tree of Lights has raised over £350,000 for local end of life care. Donations in memory of loved ones can still be made either via the St David's Hospice website.
