Stafford volunteers help host event to raise money for Ukraine

A group of Stafford volunteers have held an afternoon tea party to raise money for Ukraine.

Stafford Lions, Tealia, Sensing Spice and others put together a Sri Lankan Afternoon Tea Party which saw more than £700 go to helping those in Ukrainian.

The idea came about when Sanjay Grero, pictured above, attended a meeting of Stafford Lions to ask for support with a fundraising event to raise money for the people of Ukraine.

He proposed to hold a Sri Lankan Afternoon Tea at St Anne’s Catholic Church hall in Baswich and hoped the group could help.

Lion member Pauline Gay explained: “Sanjay’s late father Percy Grero was one of the founder members of Stafford Lions when it was formed in 1977, so we were more than happy to lend a hand.

“Sanjay's family and friends were to prepare and cook the sweet and savoury food and a family friend and representative of Tealia was to serve a variety of teas, there was even Sri Lankan music.”

The event went ahead and was a great success, with members of Stafford Lions serving the food and drinks to the tables.

The group had also organised a raffle, supplying some of the prizes while others were donated by local businesses, including A Hindle & Sons (butchers), the Barbers ST17 at Weeping Cross, Francescos, John Henry Travel, Domino’s, the Wildwood and Wildwood Pharmacy.

In total £726 was raised which was sent to Lions Club International (Europe) who are awarding grants to supply immediate and long term relief for Ukrainians in need.

Pauline added: “Not only has this event been successful in raising money but also demonstrates how groups of people  can  work together successfully  for such a worthy cause.”
