AWARD SHORTLISTED TEEN: Cameron Yates with his little brother Karson

Teenager Cameron Yates from Featherstone has been shortlisted in the Young Sibling of the Year category at the 2022 Sense Awards for the care he gives to his mother and brother who have health issues.

Cameron, 13, supports his mother who has mental and physical health issues and looks after his younger brother, Karson, 10, who is autistic and has Pathological Demand Avoidance and hypermobility.

Cameron's mum, Krissie Yates, said: “Cameron is the most caring and supportive 13-year-old I have ever come across. It hasn't been easy for him as he has had a lot to deal with from his little brother.

"Karson and I have also had a lot of hospital appointments over the years and Cameron has taken everything in his stride.

“Cameron’s nanny is in her 80s and is frail and he cares for her as well. He does jobs for her and likes to chat to her on the phone, so she isn't lonely. Cameron has had a lot to deal with in his short life, but still he is the kindest and most caring teenager you'll come across.”

Cameron, said: “I think it's awesome to be nominated, but I'm just being a big brother and I love Karson.”

Sense chief executive, Richard Kramer, said: “Cameron’s support for Karson and his wider family is wonderful to see. We are so pleased to shortlist him for the ‘Young Sibling of the Year’ award and can’t  wait to celebrate him at the virtual ceremony at the end of November.”

The Sense Awards recognise the outstanding achievements of people with complex disabilities, as well as the staff, carers, family members, volunteers and fundraisers who support them. Winners will be announced on Thursday, November 24.
