Table Tennis: Chester League

It was quarter final week in both of the handicap cup competitions and as expected there were some extremely close finishes.

In the Odex cup the clash between Newton D from the Premier and Newton F from division 1 ended with the the D side winning by 535 - 533 despite some excellent play from Marcin Stepkowski and Chris Quartermaine, and the same fate awaited the only other division 1 side left, Newton E, as they travelled to County Officers for whom Jens Andersen showed all his talent to lead the Premier team home by just three points.

Elsewhere Newton faced their own A squad and, led by Shaun Hall, triumphed by 33 points and are joined in the semis by Andy Eagles and his powerful Pulford team who accounted for Newton B by a similar margin despite a spirited performance from John Chan and his team.

In the Robert Moreton Shield quarter final ties two of the County Officers squads progressed. Keith Roper and his  division 1 C team faced a very tough match against Gt Barrow led by Gareth Hughes but were victorious by 20 points and in the all division 2 clash a similar margin  gave John Ashton and the Officers F team victory over Barrow TTC.

Newcomers to the league this season and still without a win, Scott Steel and the Brownlow team are nevertheless steadily improving and their high handicaps do not do them justice and they reached the semis with a brilliant 32 point win over undefeated division 2 leaders Groves C.

They are joined by another squad who are finding it hard in a very useful division 2 but are experienced table tennis players, and that is Alan Gilmour and his Newton G team who defeated Alan Rigby s County Officers B from division 1.
