They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, they’re all together ooky… The Southport Dramatic Club Youth Theatre are excited to be presenting the musical version of The Addams Family from 23-26 August 2023.

The original creator was cartoonist Charles Addams. He was known for his dark humour and love of the macabre. It was reported that he was ‘something of a rascal’ as a child and enjoyed spending time in his local cemetery.

The iconic mansion they dwell in was inspired by large homes he breached as a child, and College Hall at University of Pennsylvania where Addams studied. The Addams Family first featured in the New York Times in 1938 and appeared in this publication over many years until Addams’ death in 1988.

Work begins for the next season at The Little Theatre

He described them in the following terms: “Gomez and Pugsley are enthusiastic. Morticia is even in disposition, muted, witty, sometimes deadly.

"Grandma Frump is foolishly good-natured. Wednesday is her mother's daughter.

"A closely-knit family, the real head being Morticia—although each of the others is a definite character—except for Grandma, who is easily led. Many of the troubles they have as a family are due to Grandma's fumbling, weak character.

"The house is a wreck, of course, but this is a house-proud family just the same and every trap door is in good repair. Money is no problem.”

In 1964, television audiences were introduced to the clan described above and the brother of Gomez, Uncle Fester. Loyal butler Lurch and disembodied hand Thing were also regular features and Cousin It was introduced.

The show ran for two seasons, then an animated version appeared in 1973, with another cropping up in 1992 around the time that the feature film series came to being. The New Addams Family appeared on screens in 1998-1999 and spin off series Wednesday was launched in 2022.

Theatre audiences were treated to the new musical on Broadway from 2010; it featured Bebe Neuwirth and Nathan Lane as Morticia and Gomez, winning several awards. The UK debut was in 2017 in Edinburgh.

Our show boasts an impressive 27 strong cast, with about a dozen of our performers making their SDC debut. It is not to be missed!
