Torbay's new Covid Compliance Officers are on patrol

NEW Covid-19 ‘Compliance Officers’ have started work across Torbay this week.
The three new officers will help local businesses make sure they are complying with the latest coronavirus restrictions.

But they will also respond to complaints from the public about businesses breaking the rules - and they will have the power to recommend fines.

Torbay Council says the new officers will ‘engage with businesses in a positive way’, and will be supported by senior council officers with the power to issue the penalties. They will also liaise with police.

The Department of Housing, Communities and Local Government is funding the new appointments.

Council leader Steve Darling said: “We are in no doubt as to how difficult these times are for business, and we know that the rules can sometimes appear confusing.

“That’s why we’ve got three new Covid Compliance Officers out and about to help business owners, managers and staff to fully comply with all of the safety requirements that are necessary to help curb the spread of Covid.”

Deputy leader Darren Cowell added: “We must balance business continuity with safety, both for the general public and those working in the business themselves.
“I am very pleased to see our band of Covid Compliance Officers, helping more businesses to protect their customers and staff.”

The officers are clearly identifiable by their photo ID badges, which they will show when they arrive at any premises.

Anyone wishing to report concerns or seek advice about how COVID business regulations are being observed can let the council know on the council's website.
