Two "outstanding displays" during latest meeting of Ayrshire Philatelic Society

The Ayrshire Philatelic Society’s latest meeting this month involved a visit from Stewart Gardiner, of the Caledonian Philatelic Society, with two outstanding displays.

The first, entitled “Sealing and Securing the Letter.” had previously been shown at the Royal Philatelic Society and took members through the various types of seals- wax, paper, isinglass, embossing, wafers- that were used to make letters secure both before and after the introduction of envelopes.

These latter developed into seals used to promote causes or advertise goods or places.

The second display of “Valentines” took members back to their origins in France in the 1730s and 40s and brought the audience through Georgian and Victorian examples from the UK, the Continent and America with symbolic, comic, and highly decorated cards plus telegrams and postcards.

The vote of thanks from the society was given by David Bowman.
