Staff and members at White Oak Leisure Centre in Swanley are set to take on a 24-hour spinathon this weekend in support of Alan Blake, a longstanding member with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). The leisure centre’s operator, Everyone Active, is aiming to raise funds and awareness for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
The event will begin at 8am on Sunday, March 3, continuing right through until 8am the following day. Two spin bikes will be stationed in the reception area and two specially arranged spinning class groups will be pedalling non-stop for 24 hours.
Whether you're a seasoned spinner or a first-timer, everyone is encouraged to join in. Donation buckets will be located around the centre, or donations can be made to a JustGiving page here.
Olympic medallist Colin Jackson, who officially opened White Oak Leisure Centre in 2022, offered his support, saying: “It’s going to be an incredible event and I want to encourage everyone to come down and take part, every pedal counts, and every penny raised will make a real difference. Let’s show our support for Alan and everyone affected by Motor Neurone Disease, the team can’t wait to welcome you this Saturday.”
Ashley King, general manager at White Oak Leisure Centre, said: "We’re proud to come together to support Alan and raise awareness about MND. We would encourage everyone to come along, no matter your ability, to have a go on one of the bikes, even if it's just for a few minutes, to help us reach our 24-hour goal, we hope to raise as much money and awareness as possible.”
Motor Neurone Disease affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time, with a one in 300 risk of diagnosis across a lifetime, it can affect individuals of any age, but is more commonly seen in those over 50. Every day, an average of six people receive the diagnosis of MND.
