A pupil from Goldworth Primary School in Woking, Surrey, has led a school fundraiser, raising over £700 for Ukraine.
George, who is in Year 6 at the school, which is part of the Bright Futures Learning Trust, was determined to help, raising the money for the Disaster Emergency Committee's Ukraine appeal.
The pupil is deputy prime minister of the Pupils Parliament at the school, and takes on a leadership role amongst his peers, inspiring social action across the school.
As part of the Pupils Parliament initiative, George and his peers discussed how they could support the people of Ukraine and approached their headteacher to ask what they could do in the school.
Caroline McLennan, headteacher at Goldsworth Primary School, said:
“We’re very proud of George’s achievements, and of the generosity of pupils, families and staff across Goldsworth.
"We teach our pupils to prize compassion and thoughtfulness above all else, and George’s actions serve as an example and inspiration to all of us.”
Following that conversation, George had the idea that children could bring in an optional extra 50p in a separate envelope on Tuck Shop Day to donate to the appeal. He thought Tuck Shop Day would work best because children would already be bringing in money to buy treats.
George led on the initiative at the school, which was met with enthusiasm by children and staff alike. The Goldsworth community was incredibly generous in their response, wanting to do what they could to help Ukrainians during this challenging time.
