Work on new marina pontoons could begin in Fowey next month.

Fowey Harbour Commissioners is applying for a licence from the Marine Management Organisation to replace and extend the Mixtow pontoons and trot moorings.

The harbour authority, in Fowey, Corwnall, said the project would improve the safety of access to the water and be a more efficient use of the mooring area compared to the previous configuration.

The project would connect pontoons and provide additional berths with walk-ashore access, this will improve safety of access generally but also particularly benefit those with reduced mobility.

The harbour authority said the new pontoons would be an improvement on the existing 10 five-tonne granite mooring blocks, 181-metre ground chain and 13 riser chains which will be removed as part of the project.

A spokesman said: “The new configuration of the pontoons will improve the safety of access to the water and be a more efficient use of the mooring area compared to the previous configuration. This project is part of our strategy to provide and improve facilities for harbour users, ensuring safe use of the harbour for all.

“This project will connect pontoons and provide additional berths with walk-ashore access, this will improve safety of access generally but also particularly benefit those with reduced mobility.”

The harbour commissioners said the Fowey Port User Group which represents harbour users, local and parish councils and local businesses, have all been consulted over the project.

The spokesman added: “The existing pontoons and moorings have been in place for over 30 years and are approaching the end of their serviceable life. There is an urgent requirement to replace elements and the opportunity is being taken to improve the existing layout to allow easier and safer accessibility.”

Work is expected to start  on February 22 and will see the existing pontoons and fore and aft moorings and associated ground equipment removed.

The five-day section of work will then be followed by the installation of the new pontoons when the 200-metre sections will be delivered to Fowey Docks, towed 200 metres to site and slotted into place.

The harbour commissioners said the second part of the work is anticipated to take about three to four days weather permitting.
