Young cyclists raises hundreds for Uganda sanitation projects
Leon chose clean water and sanitation, and his project was based around the importance of water and how we use it
A year two pupil has been cycling across Torridge to help raise funds for water and sanitation projects in Uganda.
Leon Lowson from Clinton CofE Primary School in Merton was inspired by lessons during lockdown where pupils were asked to complete a research project based on the UN sustainability development goals.
Leon chose clean water and sanitation, and his project was based around the importance of water and how we use it.
He undertook lots of research including making his own tippy tap and compared our water supply with that of a child, Angel, in Uganda. Angel is a child the school sponsors to go to school in Uganda through the charity Edukid.
During his project his mother posed the question, 'How could you make a difference?' Leon said he wanted to raise money for Edukid.
They watched lots of videos on water aid which said children walk four miles to collect water.
His mother put this into context by telling him how far he'd have to walk every day to collect water and Leon decided that he could try and ride his bike the two miles, collect some water and ride the two miles home carrying it to experience how other people across the world live.
Leon is hoping Edukid can use the money raised to fund a water-based project in Uganda and has raised over £600.
